Weekly Voice Over Curriculum
Week 1: How to Get VO Bookings
Bring to Class: Smartphone, voice-over mic, and laptop if possible.
- Learn how to audition & book VO work.
- Discover the 14 types of demos needed and which fit your personal voice.
- Learn how to create voice-over demos and collect the correct “copy” for Narrative, Commercial, Corporate, IVR, Promo, Retail, E-Learning, and Podcasting.
- Goal: Start gathering various scripts for all the VO demos you will be recording shortly.
Week 2: Narrative VO Demo
Bring to Class: Smartphone, voice-over mic, and laptop if possible.
- Master voice-over techniques, including the 5 P’s of Voice Control: Pitch, Pace, Pause, Projection & Personality.
- Goal: Record a 1-minute narrative demo.
Week 3: Commercial VO Demo
Bring to Class: Notepad and/or laptop to take notes.
- Create a commercial demo (60 seconds, broken into 5-6 segments, 8-15 seconds each).
- Goal: Record an additional 1-minute commercial or IVR demo.
Week 4: Corporate or IVR Demo Reel
Bring to Class: Smartphone, voice-over mic, and laptop if possible.
- Learn advanced recording tips: slating in character, studying casting specs & scripts, laying down 2 takes, and more.
- Goal: Record an additional 1-minute commercial or IVR demo.
Week 5: Promo / Retail VO
Bring to Class: Smartphone, voice-over mic, and laptop if possible.
- Improve vocal range, character versatility, and find the best scripts for your demos.
- Goal: Record a 1-minute promo or retail demo.
Week 6: E-Learning & Corporate Demo
Bring to Class: Smartphone, voice-over mic, and laptop if possible.
- Learn to create compelling content to catch a casting director’s attention.
- Goal: Record a 1-minute promo or retail demo.
Week 7: Podcast Recording
Bring to Class: Smartphone, voice-over mic, and laptop if possible.
- Create a podcast and involve guests from your workshop.
- Discuss marketing and career-building steps, including:
- Common P2P sites: Voices.com, Voice123, Bodalgo, The Voice Realm, VO Planet, Fiverr, Voiver, VoiceCrew, CastingCall.club, and Backstage.
- Learn about memberships, pricing points, and current auditions posted worldwide.
- Goal: Record a podcast.
Week 8: Approve All VO Demos
Bring to Class: Smartphone, voice-over mic, and laptop if possible.
- Fine-tune and review all demo reels.
- Add each MP3 to SoundCloud with the proper photos to market each type.
- Finalize demos with edited music and send SoundCloud links & MP3s to your Agent, Manager, or P2P sites.
